Riverside FANatic 8/12/06
by Alan Plummer
Saturday the 12th was a very cool night at Riverside Speedway, a P.A.S.S. sanctioned track, but many of the drivers seemed a little hot under the collar. Nearly all divisions saw 1 or more accidents caused by someone not using their heads.
The Daredevil Novice division started the night. The 41 of Vanessa Brown started on the pole, with the 2 of Curtis Randall outside her door. Randall got the early jump, and then Brown starts to make the pass, when the 11 of Brett Gervais and the 22 of Tori Delabruere get together. On the restart, the 8 of Tyler Leighton cuts down to quickly chopping the nose of Brown, and sending Leighton around. With 2 cautions and only 1 lap complete it is decided to go to a single file restart, Brown being the leader. The 3x of Jamie Kenison goes around in turn 3, and the 3 of Kristopher Russell and Delabruere are involved. The 27 of Dickie Stanley clears, and slows only to get rear ended by Gervais. Gervais car had to be pushed to the pits, and Stanley continued. On lap 13 the 48 of Tyler Barrows shreds a tire, but continues to complete the race. Brown takes the win, followed by Leighton and Stanley.
Next on tap were the Daredevil Masters. The 00 of Ciara McCoy started on the pole with the 19 of Walter Bandy outside. McCoy takes the lead. On the 2nd lap the 73 of Riley Hartshorn goes around, and is sent to the rear. The 77 of Brandon Lambert takes the lead on the restart. On lap 2 the 04 of Shawn Swallow moves into the 2nd position. On lap 3, Bandy goes around in turn 4. The single file restart is used again, giving Lambert the lead. Lambert held on as long as he can, but a hard charging Swallow takes the lead on lap 7. At the stripe it is Swallow, followed by Lambert and the 72 of Cody Hodge.
The Angels were next on the schedule. The 55 of Traci Nelson started on the pole, with the 41 of Holly Brown outside. Holly Brown, Nelson, and the 36 of Allison Brown get together in turn 2. Holly comes out of it shaken, but Nelson takes a hard hit from Allison off turn 2 into pit lane. Nelson and Allison Brown were both routinely taken to the Hospital for a checkup, for pains they had, both were treated and released. The 7 of Kate Demar took the restart, and the win, followed by the 44 of Jennie Dion and the 72 of Heather Hodge.
The Super Stocks were up next. Their problems actually started in practice when the 8 of Denny Degreenia broke an axle and rolled the car 7 times on the pavement. Denny’s car was totaled, but he was able to borrow and old enduro car to get into the feature. The 6 of Robin Hood started on the pole with Adam Hurd in the 10 to his outside. Hood just about immediately spins the car and is sent to the rear. Hurd then takes the restart. Just as they really get going, Hurd has something break in the car and cuts down in front of the field, sending the 48 of Willie Holbrook into the pits leaking oil everywhere. Brian Middleton in the 31 takes the restart over the 76 of Shawn Hood. By lap 7 the 04 of Shawn Swallow had made it to the lead. On lap 24 Shawn Hood goes around because of a right rear blow out, and a soft front tire. Swallow again takes the lead. Middleton and the 1 of Jeremy Lacoss get together and are sent to the rear. Single file restart again. Swallow takes the checkers, followed by a rough riding 93 of Reggie Theroux and the 74 of Dan Sidney.
The Dwarfs took to the field next, and were the cleanest running division of the night. The 28 of Ernie Laplant started on the pole with the 2 of Eric Hall outside. Laplant stayed out front all night, and Hall slipped back only one position, giving the 68 of Tim Sherman 2nd.
The Street Stocks followed the Dwarfs. The 16 of Daniel Gooden started on the pole with the 1 of Mike McGee outside. Gooden took the lead and the 66 of Michael Moore moved into 2nd. McGee got high, and got shuffled back. On lap 3 the 22 of Michael Smith moved in the 2nd spot, and 1 lap later took the lead. On lap 5 McGee goes around and Gooden’s car sputters into the pits. On the restart Smith battled the 19 of Jake McDowell for the lead, after a few laps McDowell came up on top. On lap 13 the 76 of Ryan Delabruere moves into the 3rd position, then on lap 21 takes 2nd. McDowell takes his 2nd win of the season followed by Delabruere and the 68 of Derrick O’Donnell.
The Cyclone’s closed out the night with a bang. Wrecker man Scott Lambert was in the 22x, Scott wrestled with the car until lap 10 when he got together with the 29 of Chris Meunier. Too bad for Chris, he was sitting 6th in the points, and his car is totaled. He is not sure if he’ll be back this year, he needs to find a new car. The 73 of Roger Hartshorn also had a rather hard hit in the wall in the backstretch, but was OK. The 12 of Tyler Therrien found himself out of the race early. Winning the race was the 41 of Jeff Ainsworth. Rounding out the top 5 were the 62 of Jeremy Way, the 95 of Paul Schartner, the 75 of Stephen Way, and the 40 of David Couture.
