Riverside FANatic 9-22-07
by Alan Plummer
This may be the last FANatic column for the regular season. I don’t know if I’ll be able to make next weeks races. The race this past weekend at the PASS sanctioned Riverside Speedway was the championship race for the Street Stocks, Super Stocks, and Late Models. Corey Mason grabbed the championship by a mere five points over Reno Gervais. Luke Shannon had a comfortable 33 point lead over David Ofsuryk for the Super Stock championship. Troy Randall didn’t even have to show up to take the Street Stock championship over Michael Smith.
The Daredevil Rookies were up first. The 68 of Keith Lord started on the pole, with the 47 of Randy Whittum outside. Whittum took the lead as the 2 of Curtis Randall moved to 2nd. On the first lap, the 3 of Kristopher Russell moved to the 3rd spot, then on lap 4 he moves to 2nd. Brendon Hunt in the 29 overtook 3rd on lap 5. On lap 6, Whittum gets loose, and Russell and Hunt sneak under. On lap 8, the 75 of Andrew Fecteau moves to the 3rd spot. On lap 13, Whittum slides up in turn 2 and takes a rather hard hit in the back stretch wall. He was OK, but complained of a hurt leg. Russell took the restart, and the win. He was followed across the line by Fecteau and Hunt.
The Daredevil Veterans were up next. The 73 of Riley Hartshorn started on the pole, with the 44 of Kyle Pembroke outside. Hartshorn took the initial lead, but got high and Pembroke took the lead. Jesse Switser in the 5 car moved to 3rd. On lap 2 Switser takes the 2nd spot, and the 77 of Brandon Lambert moves to 3rd. Lambert tries several times to get by Switser, but can’t get it done. Pembroke takes the win followed by Switser and Lambert.
The Dwarf cars were up next. The 44 of Anthony Leary started up front, with the 92 of David Hartshorn outside. Hartshorn took the lead, but Leary regains, and the 22 of Dana Huoppi moves to 2nd, and the 2 of Eric Hall takes 3rd. Hall overtakes the 2nd spot on lap 2, and moves to the lead on lap 5. On lap 6, the 4 of Nathan Brown moves to 3rd. The red flag flies on lap 7 for the 49 of Guy Brown who goes around and hits the back stretch wall. Hall takes the restart and Brown moves to 2nd. Hall takes the win, followed by Brown and Huoppi.
The Street Stocks took to the track next. The 07 of Bill Stebbins Jr. started on the pole, with the 06 of Michael Moore outside. Moore took the initial lead, they went back and forth with Stebbins settling in as the leader. The 12 of Tyler Therrien and the 1 of Michael Mcgee got together, with Mcgee spinning in turn 3. The 04 of Shawn Swallow gained the 3rd spot. Again Stebbins and Moore were even on the restart, with Stebbins taking the lead. On lap 12 Swallow overtakes 2nd. On lap 15 the 27 of Troy Randall, who I’m told was running his enduro car in the Street Stocks, moved into 3rd, then 2nd on lap 16, and the lead on lap 20. On lap 24, Michael Smith in the 22 moved to 3rd. Swallow and Smith get together on lap 27 bringing out the yellow. Randall takes the restart. The 95 of Alex Theroux moves to 2nd. Smith, Swallow, and Therrien get together on the final lap. Randall takes the win, followed by Theroux and the 76 of Tori Delabruere.
In the Super Stocks, the 7 of Cody Leblanc started on the pole, with the 55 of Jamie Longley outside. Longley took the lead, and the 92 of Shawn Cook moved to 3rd, then 2nd. On lap 2, the 76 of Shawn Hood moves to 3rd. On lap 8, Hood looses a tire, and the 13 of Luke Shannon runs it over messing up his driveshaft. Longley takes the restart. On lap 9, the 31 of Brian Middleton moves to 2nd, and the 73 of David Ofsuryk moves to 3rd. The 8 of Denny Degreenia goes off turn 1 on lap 19. Middleton takes the restart. Ofsuryk, Middleton, and Longley all get together in turn 3 and 4. The 1 of Jeremy Lacoss and the returning 18 of Ron Watson go at it on the restart, with Watson taking the lead. The 33 of Jeff Fysh in the rebadged Gosselin machine, moved to 3rd. Lacoss takes the lead on lap 24. On lap 32 Dan Sidney, in the 74, moves to 3rd. Lacoss takes the win, followed by Watson and Sidney.
The Late Models were up next. I don’t usually bring up qualifying, but the 4 of Sparky Lapan and the team did a great job in getting the car back out after one heck of a ride off turn 2 into the catch fence. The 7 of Jean Leblanc started on the pole of the feature with the 12nh of Steve Paquette outside. Leblanc took the lead. The 69 of Don Franklin moved to 3rd. A pile up in turn 3 on lap 3 brought out the yellow. Leblanc took the restart. Franklin moves to 2nd on lap 4. Mike Kenison moved to 3rd on lap 3 and 2nd on lap 7. On lap 8 Corey Mason in the 1 moved to 3rd. Kenison took the lead on lap 12. Mason moved to 2nd on lap 14. On lap 18 Reno Gervais in the 12vt moved to 3rd. On lap 25 Gervais moves to 2nd. On lap 26 the yellow comes out for a smoking 76 of Ryan Delabruere. Gervais takes the lead. Franklin and Leblanc get together in turn 4 sending Leblanc around. Gervais again takes the lead, and Mason moves to 2nd. On lap 51 the 36 of Howard Switser gets into the back of Kenison sending Kenison around. Gervais takes the restart, as Paquette moves to 2nd, and the 68 of Brooks Clark moves to 3rd. Switser and Lapan get together. Gervais again takes the restart, and Clark moves to 2nd. Gervais takes the win, followed by Clark and Paquette.
The final event of the evening was the Cyclone Enduro. The 04x of Shawn Swallow started on the pole. By lap 30, the 9 of Ben Bedor was in the lead, with Swallow and the 20 of Charlie Rockwell behind him. The lap 50 recap had Rockwell out front, with Bedor and Swallow behind him. Rockwell was still in the lead at lap 70, with Swallow, and the 72 of Paul Hodge behind him. Swallow pitted just as the lap 90 recap was made. Rockwell was still in the lead, followed by the 16x of Dean Switser Jr. and the 33 of Josh Lafleur. Rockwell took another win followed by Switser, and the 41 of Jeff Ainsworth.
